Grey Hairs?? I'm not that Old, am I?
This was the year of my first grey hair. As someone who has experimented with a different hair color exactly twice in their life...this was an exciting event. I felt like a unicorn! That was fun and all but then a part of me felt like it reflected a more stressful time in my life. It was right on the heels of several major surgeries and that doesn't even include the election, current state of affairs, climate change...the list goes on. So, while grey hairs certainly weren't the enemy, I did not want them if they were a result of stress or nutritional deficiencies.
Enter black sesame seeds. This "magical" seed is common in Asian cooking and is believed to have high levels of antioxidants which stimulate the production of melanocytes which help keep our hair its natural color. I honestly did not put much weight into this but the sight of my first few grey hairs made me curious. Could this actually work?
Unfortunately, the supplement industry is not regulated at all so it was very difficult to find an easy pill to help add to my stack or vitamin regimen. I did, however, find some black sesame seed crackers at the grocery store so I figured I could add it to my snack supply. I ate about 5-6 crackers a day and didn't really measure nor expect any results. After about a month, I looked for the hairs and I couldn't find them. I figured it was a fluke but had to admit, the results were interesting. I continued for about 3 more months before I forgot and did not replenish my cracker supply. Fast forward a couple months and boom! I see a new grey hair! Did you know that hairs don't just grow out of your head white? Sometimes they turn lighter and whiter...almost like a gradient. I immediately realized it had been a while since I had eaten the crackers but now I was really intrigued. Did this really work??
So, I purchased a bottle of black sesame seed oil. I have been eating a teaspoon a day along with the crackers. I figure as I get older, my body will need more nutrition so even if the crackers were sufficient at one point, it may not always be the case. Stay tuned to see if this is enough to keep my grey at bay!
